The Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at the Shiley Eye Institute, UC San Diego is the only academic eye center in the region offering the most advanced treatments across all areas of eye care. Inspired by a $50 million gift made in 2018 by philanthropist Andrew J. Viterbi, PhD, the future 5-story, 100,000-square-foot facility will house wet and dry laboratories for vision research and clinical trials for precision ophthalmology, as well as administrative and educational spaces. The state-of-the-art facility currently is due to be completed by June 2025.
The Shiley Outpatient Surgical Center offers 4 state of the art operating rooms located on the top floor of the Shiley Eye Institute. Our talented team of anesthesiologists, nurses and staff provide unparalleled and compassionate eye care across all ophthalmic specialties.
The UCSD Hamilton Glaucoma Center offers comprehensive glaucoma diagnostic services and specialized treatment program for glaucoma including optic nerve imaging, anterior segment imaging, functional testing, a 24-hour diagnostic and treatment unit and specialized diagnostic and therapeutic programs.
The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Retina Center is home to research projects committed to finding solutions for people of all ages suffering from retina disorders.
The Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children’s Eye Center was opened to meet the needs of the pediatric population and creates an atmosphere that makes children feel more comfortable from the moment they walk in.
The Shiley Eye Institute has additional locations at UC San Diego Medical Center – Hillcrest, and most recently our Oculoplastic Clinic has moved to the Perlman Medical Offices.
Each year more than 100,000 American children go blind needlessly, simply because they did not receive an eye exam.
