Residency

The UCSD Shiley Eye Center Ophthalmology Residency Program places a high emphasis on excellence, ethics, and humanity in training residents to be exceptional ophthalmologists who have the tools to succeed in all aspects of Ophthalmology, whether they choose academics, research, or the private sector. Please click on the Residency Program Overview link to the left to read more about our program.

How to Apply:

Three residents are chosen each year by the Residency Selection Committee. There are no cut-off scores for USMLE exams, and there are no limitations on medical school graduation dates, but these are considered, along with medical school performance, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, and the applicant's personal statement.

Residency applications are accepted exclusively through the San Francisco Matching Program’s Central Application Service (CAS).

In addition to the CAS materials, we require supplemental application materials as outlined on our mini-application (PDF or Word .doc). DEADLINE for receipt of these materials is October 1st.

General policies regarding eligibility for residency training at UCSD can be found online at the Office of Graduate Medical Education website, or contact them at 619.543.8254.

The GME can also help foreign medical grads or non-US citizen applicants with information regarding visas or the California State Medical Board’s Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL, commonly called the “California letter”) which confirms that you meet the preliminary requirements for a state medical license. Click here to visit the California Medical Board website.

Interview Dates:

About ten percent of our applicants are interviewed each year on three Mondays: traditionally the last Monday in November and the first two Mondays of December. Any deviation from this pattern will be posted here as soon as possible, and all applicants will be immediately emailed.
