What to Give:

Cash: Usually in the form of a check, this is the most common and popular type of property given. Payable to UC San Diego Foundation. When you itemize your deductions, your gifts of cash may be deducted on your federal income tax return. Amounts up to 50% of your adjusted gross income may be deducted; any excess may be deducted over the next five years.

Mutual Funds: Contributing shares of a mutual fund usually involves establishing an account in the name of the UC San Diego Foundation at the mutual fund company, then transferring the shares to this new account.

Appreciated Securities: If you have securities that have increased in value and you have owned them at least 12 months and a day, it might be wise to consider using such an asset to make charitable gifts. When you give appreciated property, you not only receive a deduction for the full value of the asset, but you also avoid the capital gains tax that would have been due if you had sold the property. In order to maximize the tax benefits available to you, the shares must be transferred to UCSD first before they are sold.

Stock: If you own highly appreciated stock in a company that has significant cash reserves, this may be the best manner in which to make a sizeable gift. Known as a “charitable stock bailout,” such a gift is often followed by redemption of the stock by the corporation.

Real Estate: Through various ways of managing property and arranging for its distribution to family and others, you can minimize taxes and worries for your heirs. You may also be able to arrange a supplemental income for retirement as part of your gift, or, give a home, while continuing to live there.

Life Insurance: Policies that were purchased to provide protection for dependent children or as a part of a business partnership that are no longer needed for this purpose provide an excellent giving opportunity. If additional premium payments are scheduled, they can be made to the university as a tax-deductible contribution, and UCSD will make the payment to the insurance company.
