Dr. Chao’s clinical focus is in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases with a special interest in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.  He has participated and is an active investigator in many clinical trials. He is involved in multiple interdisciplinary collaborations to develop novel imaging modalities and therapeutic approaches for retinal diseases.

Dr. Chao also leads a research program using zebrafish as a translational model of retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.  His long-term goal is to identify new therapeutic targets for diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration and translate these into therapies which can help save vision for patients with these blinding diseases.
